One Tree That Transforms Your Garden

One tree, endless impact: The Statement Tree

ree

A focal points is a key element of any garden design. Using a statement tree as that focal point can create lasting impact in your garden. Whether placed at the end of a path, drawing your eye across to the far end of the property, or positioned front and center in the middle of a patio, a unique tree can set the tone for the entire landscape.

The most ubiquitous (and dare I say it, cliché) tree to use as a focal point is the Japanese maple. Hundreds of varieties are available in a range of colors, sizes, and leaf shapes. They are stunning, equally beautiful in spring and summer, with glowing fall colors, and even while showing off their sculptural shape during winter. You can even find one to fit in a pot on your patio if you don’t have much space available. However, it may require a skilled arborist to draw out that beauty and sculptural quality. Here in the mid-Atlantic, and in many other states across the US, the Japanese maple has now become an invasive species, so carefully consider this plant, especially if you live anywhere near a natural area.

There are many other species available to consider when choosing a statement tree for your landscape. Multi-stem varieties are always a great choice, as they are more likely to have the at sculptural quality during the winter, which also looks wonderful when uplit at light. Serviceberry or fringe trees can be lovely native options if chosen carefully. Even a sumac can be fun option. There is a children’s park in Washington DC where a copse of sumac trees have been pruned with a very Dr. Seuss-ian feel to them!

If you have a very small garden, a tree can be kept in a container and used as a focal point as well. Your tree needs to be extra cold-hardy if you plan to keep it in a container outdoors year-round.
